Why study Physics & Astronomy at Western?
Faculty in the Department of Physics & Astronomy have research interests ranging from the very small (atoms and nanomaterials) to the astonishingly large (galaxies and the universe itself). We study natural phenomena (star formation, Earth’s atmosphere, meteors), as well as various applications of physics in medicine (imaging, radiotherapy) and technology (solar cells, graphene, nanofabrication, optoelectronic devices, biomaterials).
If you are curious about the laws of nature, Physics or Astrophysics might be the field for you. Physics research ranges from curiosity-driven theories about the universe to practical applications in materials research and medicine. Astronomers employ theory, simulation, and observations to address problems such as star and planet formation. If you are interested in applying your Physics knowledge, modules in Materials Science provide the background in Physics, Chemistry, and Earth Science to prepare students for all aspects of modern materials research. Medical Physicists develop tools for diagnostic imaging (e.g., MRI and ultrasound), cancer treatment, and neuroscience.
We have research opportunities for our undergraduates through summer research positions, as well as through our senior honros thesis course. We also have internship positions for students who wish to gain industry experiences during their undergraduate degree. Last but not least, we also have international exchange opportunities for those who are interested in experiencing a different culture while taking courses that count toward their degrees at Western.
